Chlamydia, sometimes known as the silent disease because it can go undetected for some time. Most people infected with Chlamydia do not realise they have it until a complication happens.

Chlamydia is passed on during sex and affects both men and women. Infection can spread through vaginal, anal or oral sex. Pregnant women can pass Chlamydia to their unborn child.

Symptoms include:

  • a white/cloudy discharge from the penis
  • Painful when peeing and a swelling of the testicles (balls)
  • Unusual vaginal discharge
  • Pain when peeing
  • Bleeding during/after sex
  • Lower abdominal pain

Treatment:

Prescribed antibiotic tablets. They can be taken as a single, or as part of a longer course. If not treated Chlamydia may infect reproductive organs and could cause serious health problems.
