Teenage Pregnancy Team
The team consists of 7 people who each have a specific role. This includes working with young people aged between 12-25 years, male and female.
We link with community based initiatives and provide support to schools as well as youth and community settings.
This is part of an integrated package of sex & relationship education and sexual health service provision.
The role of the team
The role of the team includes:
- To provide appropriate information, advice and support to young people on sexual health issues. E.g. puberty, contraception, men's health, risk taking behaviour.
- To provide outreach services to young people in schools, youth clubs, training agencies, residential homes and other community settings.
- To provide training and workshops for workers who support young people
- To develop young person friendly advertising, leaflets and posters
- To deliver a co-ordinated approach to condom distribution through the SHOWT card scheme
Future Work:
As part of the Teenage Pregnancy Strategy, we are looking towards the following developments:
- Continue to provide young person friendly literature with appropriate sexual health information
- Develop boys and young men's sexual health programme
- Develop and deliver sexual health information and training for parents
- Build on sex and relationship education currently delivered in schools, as well as youth and community settings
- Increase number of condom card outlets and contraceptive clinics for young people
- Develop and deliver training programme which links drugs, alcohol and sex to risk taking behaviour
Partnerships:
Strong healthy partnerships have evolved with young people, contraceptive and GUM services, Leaving Care Services, Local Education Authority, Youth and Community Workers, Social Services and Schools.

SHOWT
SHOWT Condom Card scheme is:
- A confidential, free service where young people aged between 14-25 years can access free condoms.
The condom card scheme aims to:
- Provide all young people (including the transient population as well as asylum seekers and refugees) access to free condoms through the establishment of a co-ordinated condom distribution network
- Reduce the incidence of unplanned teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections among young people
- Provide a service, which empowers young people to make healthy sexual choices
- Improve access to free condoms at a range of easy access venues across the City
Facts:
- There are now over 3,500 young people registered on the scheme
- We have over 40 outlets across the City including community setting
- Training is available to agencies keen to become a SHOWT card outlet
